Bistro Lago belongs to the Nourish Group run by executive chef and celebrity Gareth Stewart. We were eager to see if it lived up to his high standard. We were not let down.
The restaurant Bistro Lago is located at the stunning Hilton Hotel on State Highway 5, 2 minutes drive from the Taupo lakefront. The original hotel on the site dates back to 1889 and fronts the iconic De Brett’s thermal pools – which themselves have received a welcome makeover in the last decade.
The view from the restaurant is breathtaking. On a clear evening, you can see the entire lake with mountains, Ruapehu, Ngaruhoe and Tongariro looking magnificent in the background. We were treated to a spectacular sunset – and a very warm evening for November!
For a starter we shared the Smoked Akaroa Salmon with Apple Salad, Potato Crisps and Caper Berries. The potato crisps were delicious and complimented the Salmon perfectly. We loved the pottery dinnerware that the dish was served on also.
For mains, my partner had the Market Fish of the Day – Terakihi served with Clams and Chorizo, and I had the Pork Belly served with scallops. I had hoped a freshly caught Rainbow Trout may have featured for the fish of the day, but perhaps for another visit!
The Pork Belly was served with a fennel and celery slaw. Both the pork and scallops were cooked to perfection. The scallops were very generous in size.
To go with dinner, my partner enjoyed a glass of Vavasour Pinot Gris (Marlborough), while I tried a local craft beer – Crafty Trout (www.craftytrout.co.nz). The amber ale was very drinkable and I would definitely have again.
Our bill, including: Sparklng Water, 4 x Craft Beers, 4 x Wines, Entree and 2 x Mains (and a side of fresh garden vegetables) came to a very reasonable $199.50. As you can see by the amount of alcohol sampled – we both had a very enjoyable evening. Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. We will be visiting again.
